Parque Zaragoza has a fascinating history that dates back to 1862, when general Ignacio Zaragoza Sequin defeated the French troops at Puebla de Los Angeles. This victory gave rise to the park’s name, Parque Zaragoza. The park sits on 9.3 acres and has been a gathering place for the Hispanic community for decades. By the 1930s, the City of Austin had dedicated Zaragoza Park as a place where Hispanic community leaders came together to organize baseball games. In 1996, a state-of-the-art 17,000-square-foot recreation center was constructed, featuring iconic murals painted by local artist Fidenco Duran. Thanks to the efforts of our community leaders, we now have our Latino version of Zilker Park right in the heart of downtown Austin. The park is a beautiful and welcoming place for all to enjoy.
