Many people think that names are just a way to identify someone. But there’s a lot more to a name than that! A name is like an identity. It’s who you are and how people see you. Imagine if your name was changed to something else. It would be like you’re a completely different person! That’s why it’s essential to keep the name of the AB Cantu recreation center the same. When we hear the name of the AB Cantu recreation center, it makes us feel happy and proud. Shakespeare understood this when he wrote his famous line, “what’s in a name?” He knew that a name is much more than just a word. It carries the weight of everything that we are.
The AB Cantu recreation center is an integral part of the Latino community in Austin. It was named after a man who dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of Latinos and other minority groups. He was a voice for those who had none, and he fought for the chance for everyone to have an equal opportunity to succeed. His work made a difference in the lives of countless people, and it continues to inspire those fighting for justice today. Changing the recreation center’s name would insult his memory and everything he stood for. It would also be a blow to the Latino community that has worked hard to establish itself in Austin. The AB Cantu recreation center is where our community can come together and celebrate our culture and history. It is a place where we can remember those who have fought for us in the past, and it is a place where we can continue to fight for our future.
Oswaldo A.B. Cantu was a leader in the Latino community in Austin, and he worked hard to make sure that the Pan American recreation center was a place for kids to succeed. He believed that all children should have the opportunity to get into positive recreational sports like boxing, no matter where they come from. As a result, the A.B. Cantu Pan Am symbolizes Austin’s diversity. It’s one of the only recreation centers in the city that serves a predominantly Latino population. And all of us need to remember that we’re all different, which makes our city so unique. So next time you’re at the A.B. Cantu Pan Am, take a moment to think about all the people who have made it possible for us to be there – including Oswaldo A.B. Cantu. And remember, always respect our elder leaders! They fought hard for our community; we should always honor their memory by keeping their legacy alive.

Oswaldo A.B. Cantu Pan Am is a special place for us because it has not been affected by gentrification. When other parts of Austin have changed and become more expensive, Oswaldo A.B. Cantu Pan Am has remained the same. It is a landmark for us and makes us feel at home. We are celebrated here – we are the reason this place exists! So when you come to Oswaldo A.B. Cantu Pan Am, you can be sure that you’ll find a community that feels like family.
The Oswald A.B Cantu recreation center is a special place for me. It’s where I first felt my mother seriously considered allowing me to take on more responsibilities with La Prensa, her newspaper. Standing on the stage and accepting an award for her newspaper was a memorable moment for me, and I don’t want that memory to be erased along with the name of the recreation center.
We must fight to preserve our memories of tender moments that have been spent in our neighborhoods that have shaped the people that we are because if we erase the names of historic Latino landmarks named after our Latino leaders, it’s the same as erasing our history and who we are and what we represent and what we contributed to the history of Austin.
