The Americas Summit is a meeting of leaders from countries in the Americas. They meet to discuss issues that are important to the region, like trade, security, and economic development. The Summit is held every two years, and it’s a chance for leaders to come together and talk about how they can work together to make the Americas a better place.
The Americas is a continent that includes North America, South America, and Central America. It is located in the Western Hemisphere and is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea.
The Mexican president did not attend the Summit because other Latin American countries were not invited. This is a problem for the Biden administration because they hoped to strengthen relations between Latin America, especially since the Trump administration did not have a strong relationship with Mexico.
Some people in the United States government decided not to invite leaders from Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua to the meeting. This is because a senator from New Jersey, Robert Menendez, doesn’t like these countries. He thinks they are run by mean people who don’t care about their citizens. He said that the meeting is an opportunity for countries with democracy to get together and talk about how they can prosper and have values that everyone agrees with. In other words, he thought it would be better if the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua weren’t there. Senators are people who work in Congress to make laws. A state is like a country but smaller. The United States has 50 states. Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua are all countries in North America, just like the United States. Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua weren’t invited because their leaders don’t share similar views as the rest of the countries that were invited. This Summit is a chance for like-minded countries to come together and talk about how they can help improve each others’ lives. Hopefully, by working together, they can develop some good solutions!
This isn’t the first time Latin American countries have been left out of the Summit. It happens pretty often. The Bidin administration has said that it is still committed to working with Latin America, but this exclusion makes that task much harder. We also don’t know how Cubans, Venezuelans, and Nicaraguans will respond to being left out of the Summit.
